Master of Arts in Teaching - Mathematics

NOTE: The M.A.T program is not accepting new applications at this time. The information below is provided for reference purposes. Please contact the M.A.T. Coordinator, Dr. Madeleine Jetter, with any questions about the status of the program. The M.A.T. in Mathematics is designed for single subject credential teachers who wish to obtain a deeper understanding of mathematics and the teaching of mathematics as it applies to the teaching of mathematics at the secondary level. The program is designed to be a two year program. For more information on the program not covered here, please contact the M.A.T. Coordinator, Professor Madeleine Jetter.

Admission to the Program

To be admitted into the program, you must apply to the University to be admitted as a graduate student and apply to the program itself. Please review the Application Procedure and obtain the M.A.T. Application Form. Application forms for admission to the program may also be obtained from the Department of Mathematics, Jack Brown Hall, Room 370. In addition to the general requirements of the university which include a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college, specific requirements for classification in the program are:

  1. Successful completion with a grade of "B" (3.0) or better in course work deemed equivalent to the following courses at California State University, San Bernardino:
    • MATH 211. Basic Concepts of Calculus
    • MATH 212. Calculus II
    • MATH 213. Calculus III
    • MATH 251. Multivariable Calculus I
    • MATH 329. Transformational Geometry
    • MATH 345. Number Theory and Proof
    • MATH 372. Combinatorics
  1. A teaching credential;
  2. Submission of a completed Master of Arts in Teaching Mathematics application form;
  3. Completion of the graduate entrance writing requirement;
  4. Three letters of recommendation;
  5. Submission of a one- or two-page typewritten statement of the student's area of interest, preparation for study in this program and professional goals;
  6. Approval by the Graduate Coordinator;

Students who do not meet these criteria may be admitted as conditionally classified graduate students following review by the Department of Mathematics and the College of Education.
