The Willow Flycatcher is a casual visitor to campus with four records of spring migrants from mid May to mid June and three records of fall migrants from August to early September. It is a common spring and fall migrant and a very rare breeding resident in southern California. The locally breeding subspecies of Willow Flycatcher (E. t. extimus) is listed as an Endangered Species by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. The Willow Flycatcher can be identified by its brown head and upperparts, white throat, grayish underparts and wing bars, and orange lower mandible (bottom half of the bill). It is a member of the genus Empidonax, a group of notoriously difficult-to-identify flycatchers.
